Sniping Helo's Just Shy Of A Klick! (Video)
-HTI Anti-Material Rifle & G28 Scope-
Sniping helo's, chopper to chopper dog fights, exploding cars - just a normal day in the Wildlands. The video, "Hard On Helo's - Wildlands" will take you through a typical 24 hour day for the Wildlands. I was doing free play that 'game day'. Basically looking for trouble and finding plenty. A couple of good chopper dogfights with both guns and rockets. Then I take up station in Koani on top of the large natural stone bridge. It turns out to be a great place to snipe for for both autos and helo's. Two helicopters are sniped at extreme range, some at medium range. The two extreme range helo's were at 990 and 950 meters as best as I can tell. Much of the shooting is more by feel than science. The scope was only ranged, at the time, to 800m. Then after shooting the video I went back and doped it out to a kilometer. Needed help with that as I couldn't see my bullet strikes even against a metal shed. So my friend Mac gave me a hand with that, thanks Mac!
For some reason, establishing a proper lead on a shot drives me nuts in this game. I can get a walking soldier pretty easily, usually one hash in the G28 scope. A runner from time to time. Vehicles though, just seem to elude me. I think part of it is due to the very narrow fields of view in this game when aiming first person. All the scopes, especially the 1X scopes and iron sights, are either over magnified or the field of view is too restrictive. So a lot of the visual cues are missing. Plus the G28 scope looks like it was developed from an image taken outside the back range of the scope. The exit pupil is shrunken in the image causing it to vignette the view. Someone should have caught that. So it looks like you are looking down a black pipe. Still, I find it to be the best scope for my use. The alternating dots and hashes make it easy to pick the right hold over for the range. Most of the scopes have reticles that are just too thick and get in the way. Also, many don't match the bullet drop well and scrunch the range out to 500m into a couple of hash marks. That makes it hard to pick 300 and 400m ranges, let alone 50m increments. The G28, as flawed as the image is, spreads the drop out over a range of hash marks which makes picking the right one much easier. Still, it only seems to fit certain rifles. I also really like the idea of the red dot scope mounted on top of the large scope. It makes it easier to keep situational awareness while sniping. How many snipers have you knifed in games because they didn't get out of their scope to keep situationally aware? A bunch I bet.
Shooting helo's at nearly a klick is a real thrill and gives a sense of accomplishment. Even if you know the range, you still don't know the speed or the flight path angle to your position. So, shooting at them will still be a matter of trial and error. What I have found is you need to lead more than you think. Usually half the entire scope. Shots going more directly away from you are the easiest with crossing shots being the hardest. And don't forget your hold over while you try to adjust the lead you give.
Dogfighting with the Little Birds can be an exercise in frustration as they are nearly impossible to aim. I found two ways to get around it depending on whether it is a running fight or a standing fight. If the fight is pretty much stationary or standing I try to get on the side of other chopper. Then I pogo my bird up and down, firing the whole time. This saws the shots up and down on the other bird. Often two cuts will down the other chopper. You can do it from the front. But you will probably only get one gun on them and be taking hits the entire time. If it is a running fight, I try to come up on the other bird from the rear and establish a parallel path. Then I fire a shot to get him into a fight. Pass the other bird, pull a tight turn. The turn is done by rolling my bird (Shift + [A or D] held) then when I am rolled as far as possible adding in some up pitch (Shift + [A or D] + S). You can dodge SAM's this way also. Fire earlier than you think. In the video I completely luck out and barely catch the other bird's rotor tip with a rocket because of a late shot.
Think you will enjoy this video. It is packed with action and improbable shots. Keep your screen capture handy to get the HTI/G28 scope dope out to 1km.
The video is 1080p/60fps and will stand full screen up to 1440p. I recommend full screen viewing.
